"STOLEN ART HOW EXTENSIVE IS THE PROBLEM ?"

The working session took place on November 1, 2007, in the afternoon, in the "Salle Grommaire" at the Méridien Montparnasse Hotel, Paris. The room was very crowded and the audience was very interested in the reports. We analyzed first the international legal framework about stolen art and the restitution policies of works of art. Furthermore, we focused on the art stolen during conflicts (UNESCO Treaty). Moreover, we analyzed the famous DeWeerth Case, discussed in the New York State Courts, about a Monet painting. Subsequentey, we discussed a a legal issue about an ancient Etruscan chariot (The Golden Chariot), displayed in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of New York. This archaeological manufact is claimed by an Italian small village, and it was supposed to be exported without authorizations in the beginning of the XX Century. However, the issue was discussed from an italian point of view. Additionally, we deepened the topic of Nazi looted art from both the American and the European perspective. For each topic an interesting debate arose. The speakers were from Belgium, Italy, Switzerland and USA.
